An airliner bound for Paris experiences difficulties and turns back to New York. But on its approach to landing it crashes, and forty-five lives are lost. Captain Hugo Price, who may or may not have made a mistake in judgment, is held accountable by a formal board of inquiry. His failed marriage, a romantic relationship with his First Officer, Sarah McClure, and other aspects of his personal and professional life come under harsh official scrutiny as everyone, Hugo included, tries to decide whether the disaster was inevitable or the result of human error. A moving and dramatic story of love in the modern era, of airliners and the men and women who fly them, and organs of officialdom that protect the illusion of technology as a shield against mortality.

Human Error edition by Tom Casey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Rather legthy book more concerned with the pilot's personal interactions, rather than details of the accident and subseqent investigation. Nice ending!
The story is interesting with regards to the information regarding the investigation of a plane crash. That is the only reason for the 2 star rating. Otherwise, I found this novel filled with a lot of fluff. It almost seemed that this book was being written by 2 individuals because the writing style was not consistent. The author's writing at times would be straight forward and other times it appeared he was trying too hard to impress the readers with his overly creative writing style. In addition, I found the author to be all over the place regarding the story. When I finally trudged through to the ending, I was very disappointed.
A pilot friend of mine recommended this novel to me. It's a story of flying and tragedy on many levels, but mainly it's a love story. It is written in a way that it gives you a pilot's view of the aviation industry as well as being a beautifully written story with a lyrical inflection throughout. Casey's characters come alive through their trials and uncertainty in a way that transcends the story itself. I found it to be not only an interesting look into the world of aviation but a rich reading experience as well. I would highly recommend it.
A commercial plane goes down and the cause must be found. The human, political and engineering considerations are woven together by an author who is in fact a commercial pilot for a major airline. It is written with an insiders knowledge of of the industry and flight by an author with a passion for aviation.

The book is relatively short and makes for quick reading.
Recommended.
Read this book over a roundtrip flight recently. It's much more than an analysis of a plane crash, the extended metaphor works well to show (SPOILER ALERT!) the crash of a plane and the crash of a marriage and how the characters change through sorting out the pieces of the wreckage from both. To the reviewer who disliked the scene of the ex-wife in California - it's called exposition and it developed the character in unique ways. If you don't like sex you don't have to read novels - it's a free country.

I was especially impressed when the action in Part 2 really took off. Part 1 laid the foundation of my belief in these well-drawn characters. It is an excellent book and reading most of it on the plane helped the drama for me of course. The unique perspective of the author (he was a pilot on a major airline I believe) led reality and credibility to the scenes inside the cockpit.

I'm going to buy a second book by Tom Casey and I'm looking forward to starting it.
While some of this book was interesting, mostly the actual part about the flight in question and perhaps the relationship with the co-pilot, the rest was awful. To a point, the issues involving the estranged wife was relevant. But all of a sudden, she is in San Diego at her girlfriends house, has sex with her husband in the pool cabana, and then with the girlfriend after he leaves??? Several similar liaisons seemed more appropriate as amateur submissons to Penhouse and made no sense in this book.
A great combination of the human story of a flyer
coupled with fascinating details of how an aircraft works
and how an air investigation works when things go wrong.
